Field Notes

Field Notes

The idea of taking field notes seems quite anthological for a technological based assignment. Also the idea of taking field notes on myself is also quite strange, I found myself on the internet or on my phone forgetting to analyze myself. I that I check my phone WAY more often, from my notes I discovered that I checked my phone 30 times in one day! I had no idea I was addicted. The reason for this I believe is my “mindless” scrolling. I did this constantly during class, in the elevator, walking, riding the shuttle or L, at the library, and even when I was out with friends. Why do I feel the need to check social media when all my friends are right in front of me? This mindless scrolling was through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, email, and Spotify. All excellent time wasters. Out of all of them I used Snapchat, Twitter, Spotify, and Instagram the most, but I realized I wasn’t doing very much tweeting or posting just viewing other peoples. Snapchat I used the most because it is a quick and easy way to feel connected to friends from all over without much effort. I also listen to music constantly when I’m walking, taking transportation, or working out so my phone it literally always attached to me which could account for the constant checking.

When it came to my computer I was actually surprised with the amount of social networking I didn’t do (because I was doing it on my phone). I actually did a lot of work! Which is reassuring. I used RescueTime to give me an idea of how productive I was actually being. In one week I only had 15% of social media! In the past couple weeks I have been searching for a job so I was spending a good deal of time on Linkedin applying to jobs, networking, and updating my resume. As well as searching, researching, and emailing for jobs online through freefashioninternships.com, careersushi.com, and ramblerlink. My one downfall I have to say is Pinterest. I used it as a time waster, and I really do get inspired by some of the content on there. I was pinning fashion looks, editorials, and places I want to travel. One day I spent a straight hour on Pinterest without even realizing, time seemed to speed by. I am very visual, so the idea of less-reading more picture is very attractive. Another large tim waster from my notes was spending 2 hours on Vogue.com watching their Videos such as funny shorts that included celebrities and other high profile people, cooking tutorials , music videos, interviews with designers, models, etc., and fashion shows. After watching one video I just kept going. It was addicting. Of course a this post wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Netflix, which I was surprised how much I didn’t use. In the course of a week I spent total of 8 hours on, but I was always doing other things like searching the web, homework, or reading while watching. I was watching House or documentaries which I have recently been really interested in. The last documentary I watched was called Undefeated, which is an amazing film on a intercity football team. It is one my favorites, I’ve watched it several times. ¬†After analyzing I realized that on my computer I am much more productive and when I am wasting time I am going on sites that truly interest me and that influence my passions (fashion, food, travel).¬†IMG_5967 IMG_5968 IMG_5970
